COHP Advisory Board

Our Advisory Board Committee includes prominent business members, community members, current and retired SDSU faculty members, and SDSU graduates.


Dr. Fred W. Kasch, Professor Emeritus and Founder of AFP

Dr. Kasch worked at San Diego State University in the Department of Physical Education (presently known as the Department of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences) from 1948 to 1980. As the former director, the Exercise Physiology Laboratory now bears his name in recognition of his pioneering efforts. An Endowment was established in his name to encourage and support student research and academic growth. He also received the American College of Sports Medicine Citation Award in 1982.


Dr. Joyce Gattas, Dean of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts

Dr. Gattas has served San Diego State University as Dean of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts since July 1988. In her role as Dean of the College, she manages eleven diverse departments: Aerospace Studies; Art, Design, and Art History; Child and Family Development; Communication; Drama; Military Science; Music and Dance; Naval Science; Exercise and Nutritional Sciences; Public Administration and Urban Studies; and Recreation, Parks and Tourism. The College has 7000 majors and 550 faculty and staff and three research centers that provide students with opportunities for firsthand research experience. These centers are: the International Center for Communications, the Institute of Public and Urban Affairs, and the Institute for Leisure Behavior.


Dr. John Boyer, MD, Medical Director under Dr. Fred Kasch

Dr. Boyer is the consulting cardiologist with Pacific Imaging and Treatment Center. Dr. Boyer was the first medical director of the Exercise Laboratory and Adult Fitness program in 1965.


Richard Cotton, MA Chief Exercise Physiologist at MyExercisePlan.com

Until l999, Mr. Cotton was with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the world's largest nonprofit fitness certifying organization and a consumer resource for reliable and effective health and fitness information. MyExercisePlan.com came from Mr. Cotton's desire to offer what 90% of people say they wanted: practical online help. Mr Cotton is a San Diego Fitness Professional with an M.A. in exercise physiology from San Diego State University.


Kathie Davis, Executive Director IDEA Health & fitness Association

Kathie Davis is the Executive Director of one of the world's leading membership organization of health and fitness professionals, with over 19,000 members in more than 80 countries. Mrs. Davis co-founded the organization with her husband, Peter, in 1982. Mrs. Davis was also the co-founder and past Vice-President of the American Council on Exercise (formerly the IDEA Foundation). She has been a special advisor to the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Mrs. Davis is on the Board of Advisors of Fitness and Vitality magazines and is a contributing writer for a number of industry publications. In addition, she is on the Advisory Board for the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts at San Diego State University.

Mrs. Davis received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education from San Diego State University in 1979 and was awarded its Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award in 1993.


Alex F DeNoble Ph.D., Past AFP member & SDSU Professor for College of Business Adminstration

Dr. DeNoble is the Entrepreneurial Management Center Director of Academic Programs and a Professor of Management for the College of Business Administration. He is actively involved in teaching and research in the areas of strategic management and entrepreneurship. Dr. DeNoble serves as Director of Venture Challenge and as an advisor for the San Diego State University Business Plan Competition teams and for students pursuing an MBA in Entrepreneurship. Dr. DeNoble is also a past AFP member.


Kathy Jones, PhD Faculty in Exercise & Wellness at Arizona State University

Dr. Kathy Jones has been involved in the fitness field for 30 years as a fitness instructor, community health club administrator, and University faculty at Arizona State as well as San Diego State. Her areas of interest include the use of technology for health education, writing course curriculum, and supervision of graduate student teaching. She is now teaching undergraduate courses for Arizona State online from San Diego. When not looking at a computer screen, she can be found on the tennis court or in a pool.


Sheri Leiter, M.A., M.S.W.

Ms. Leiter joined the Institute for Health Maintenance professional staff in 1993 and has been involved in weight management for more than 15 years. Ms. Leiter has a Masters degree from San Diego State University in Applied Exercise Physiology and a Masters degree in Social Work. Her clinical experience has involved research and direct patient care, and as an exercise specialist, Ms. Leiter offers particular expertise in developing exercise programs for weight-loss clientele.


Scott Tinley, Athlete, Author, Teacher

Mr. Tinley is a retired professional triathlete and two-time winner of the Hawaii Ironman endurance race. He was inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame in 1996. Currently, Mr. Tinley is a writer and teacher. His latest book, Racing the Sunset, a journey through athlete retirement and the larger issues of life transition and change, is the result of one of the most thorough research projects ever attempted on retiring athletes. He also teaches English and "Sport and Society" at San Diego State University.


Susan Weber, Current COHP group exerciser

Mrs. Weber is the First Lady of San Diego State University and active with San Diego State University BRIDGES. She has been a participant of the group exercise program since January 2005 and has enjoyed the interaction with the graduate students and faculty of COHP.
